Computing and Management faculty publishes in the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing

A manuscript titled, “Profiling Players Using Real-World Datasets: Clustering the Data and Correlating the Results with the Big-Five Personality Traits” authored by Dr. Zahid Halim et al. has been accepted for publishing in the upcoming issue of the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing. Their study profiles players using data collected from strategy games. This is done by taking into account the gameplay and the associations between the personality traits and the subjects playing the game. In addition to the benchmark strategy game datasets, the study also utilized the Age of Empire-II game data, collected using 50 participants. The IPIP-NEO-120 personality test was conducted using these participants to evaluate them on the Big-Five personality traits. The research showed that the gameplay can be used to predict various personality features using strategy game data. This is a groundbreaking research for indirect personality assessment using machine learning methods. This work was conducted under the umbrella of one of the Institute’s research group – MInG (https://www.minrg.org). MInG is working in close collaboration with national and international partners to solve problems in the domain of Data Science, Machine Learning, and Affective Computing. The conducive environment at GIK has always been helpful to produce high-quality research. The research group has recently been able to publish their applied and theoretical research at top-notch venues.  The article can be read at: http://doi.org/10.1109/TAFFC.2017.2751602 …

Computing faculty publishes in the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning

Dr. Zahid Halim and Dr. Ahmar Rashid, Associate Professors, Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering have published a manuscript titled, “Efficient Clustering of Large Uncertain Graphs Using Neighborhood Information” in the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning. In their work, they have presented an intelligent framework for clustering large uncertain graphs, using the neighborhood structure of the graph in the preprocessing step. The framework converts a graph with uncertainties on its edges to a certain graph by predicting the existence of the edges using a classifier. Once the uncertain graph is converted to a certain graph, standard clustering algorithms are applied to extract the clusters. The work has many applications, ranging from biomedical to experimental physics. Dr. Zahid Halim’s research group – MInG (https://www.minrg.org) is working in close collaboration with national and international partners to solve problems in the domain of Data Science and Machine Learning. The paper can be read at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijar.2017.07.013 …

Rector congratulates PEC on Pakistan becoming ‘Full Signatory’ Member of Washington Accord. Commends GIK faculty for its role.

Jehangir Bashar, Rector of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, congratulated Engr. Jawed Salim Qureshi, Chairman, Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) on the occasion of Pakistan achieving Full ‘Signatory Status’ of the Washington Accord (WA). He said this was due to the continuous efforts of PEC over several years. He particularly commended Dr. Nasir Mahmood Khan, Additional Registrar for his contribution. The Rector said that he was extremely proud of the significant role played by GIK in this very important achievement, thanks to its highly qualified and experienced faculty, as well as the support departments.  To consider Pakistan’s application for membership a three member WA team comprising Basil Wakelin (New Zealand), Team Chair, Colin Peter Smith (UK) and Dr. Jung Soo Kim (USA) paid a three days visit to GIK Institute in November 2016 to assess the PEC accreditation process. The selection of GIK Institute (one of two universities in the country, the other being IST) by the WA evaluators itself was indeed a reflection of the confidence in the quality of education here. The Rector said that GIK has led the country in adopting “Outcome Based Education” or, OBE. The two faculties selected for review were the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.  The Rector praised the two faculties for their high academic standards, which greatly facilitated Pakistan’s membership of the Washington Accord. Originally signed in 1989, the WA is a multilateral agreement between bodies responsible for accreditation or recognition of tertiary-level engineering qualifications within their jurisdictions who have chosen to work collectively to assist the mobility of professional engineers. The signatories are committed to development and recognition of good practices in engineering education. The WA is specifically focused on academic programs which deal with the practice of engineering at the professional level. The Accord has grown from an initial group of six signatories to 19 as a well-structured and sought-after organization.  Pakistan was declared as ‘Full Signatory’ of the WA in its General Assembly meeting held in Anchorage, USA on 21st June 2017. PEC represented Pakistan, which became only the third Muslim signatory country after Malaysia and Turkey, which is a great achievement and honor for the country. This will particularly boost the engineering profession and raise the status of universities accredited by the PEC.        …
